Sari Sari Falls, Dominica

11 Aug

Sari Sari Falls near La Plaine in the south east – a great river hike with some tricky boulder climbing but well worth the effort. Avoid the trail when it’s raining as flash flooding is possible; but otherwise, this is a magnificent waterfall.

The Splendour and Beauty of Belize

10 Aug

The Splendour and Beauty of Belize

Source: Bravofly

Once a best-kept secret, the word is out on Belize. This tiny Central-American nation, formerly known as British Honduras, offers a vast array of choices for the discerning traveler. With seven distinct regions offering biodiversity, indigenous culture, Mayan ruins, extreme adventure and incredible beaches, it’s no wonder that tourism is on the rise.

Here are some of the can’t miss experiences to include in a visit to Belize:

BELIZE CITY

Belize City is the largest city in the country. It is the historical but not the official Capitol. It is mostly known at the arrival point into the country and the jumping off point for the more touristic destinations. While not a tourist magnet in and of itself, there are some higher end hotels in the Ft. George area if you find yourself spending the night her.

JUNGLES

San Ignacio in the Cayo District is the most popular area for visiting Belize’s jungles. Accommodations here run the gamut from camping to luxury eco lodges like Chaa Creek. It’s a haven for adventure seekers with options for cave tubing, zip-lining, rappelling, jungle canoeing and kayaking. The Orange Walk District in northwestern Belize is home to several excellent jungle lodges such as Chan Chich Lodge, Lamanai Outpost Lodge and La Milpa. Visitors can hike, horseback ride, enjoy birding and even take a night-time crocodile safari.

The Toledo District in southernmost Belize is the least explored by most tourists. If you are looking for something more off the beaten path, the Toledo District just might be for you. Here you will find deep jungle rainforest, jungle rivers and waterfalls, unexcavated Mayan ruins and villages that have hardly changed in the past 100 years.

The Splendour and Beauty of Belize

MAYAN RUINS

Belize has no shortage of Mayan Ruins and they can be found scattered throughout the country. The most spectacular, not to be missed sites are Lamanai, Caracol, Xunantunich, Tikal (which is in Guatemala) and Altun Ha. Lamanai is the longest continually inhabited site in Belize. It sits on about 1,000 acres and has about 70 excavated structures. It can be reached from Belize City or the Orange Walk District. Caracol is one of the largest sites in the Mayan world and had a population density greater than Continue reading

Grenada’s Oldest Woman Honoured By Queen Elizabeth

6 Aug

Source: Grenada Informer

Written by  Rawle Paterson

A 114-years-old great-great-grandmother from Carriacou is being honored as one of the oldest women in the world.

For the first time in her long life Leonora Noel has received a birthday greeting from Queen Elizabeth – but it arrived late.  The first card sent from Buckingham Palace went missing in the post.  A replacement was dispatched via the office of the Governor General of Grenada and delivered to Carriacou by the Governor General.

Masima, as she is known to friends, is recognized as Grenada’s oldest resident.  She lives modestly in a simple wooden house above the village of L’Esterre, Carriacou.  She spends most days sitting quietly where she can watch her chickens roam around the bushes outside and spot visitors who call to wish her well.  Grandson Gibson George is on hand next door to help the lady who he says was so important to him as he was growing up.

The super-centenarian enjoys a good appetite and takes occasional trips in a neighbor’s car to the local town. Apart from help around her home she looks after herself and says she is strong and in better health than the 83-year-old daughter who lives with her.  She admits her hearing is not as good as it has been but she can happily sing in tune the song she learned as a little girl in school more than a century ago.

This remarkable lady is bright, alert and surprisingly mobile. Recently she climbed up a flight of stone steps to meet her new great-great-grandchild, a baby girl named Sarah.  Her trip is documented in the short video made by a visiting

Masima is greatly admired by the Carriacou community which speaks of her many kindnesses to local families over generations.

Masima is obviously thought to have been born before almost anyone still alive today in the British Commonwealth – only one Jamaican woman is older. There are only four more people in the world verified as older – one woman in Italy, another in Spain, and two in Japan.

Masima was born in 1902 in Venezuela. When she was seven years old her mother died there in childbirth. The young girl was brought to Carriacou by her father Sherman, who originated on the island, and she was raised by grand-parents and aunts.

Grenada was a British colony until independence in 1974. Grenada remains part of the British Commonwealth and Masima is a subject of the Queen’s Realm.   Many local people left the islands to seek work in the United Kingdom and scores became nurses and factory workers there.

Brathwaite new Windies T20 captain

6 Aug

Source: Guardian

Written by Vinode Mamchan

World T20 winning captain Darren Sammy has been replaced as captain of the West Indies T20 team by Barbadian Carlos Brathwaite.

The all rounder who smacked four sixes in the final over of the world T20 finals in India against England to lift the title is the man who has been recommended by the West Indies senior selection panel for the top job. The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is more than likely to approve the choice of Brathwaite.

The right hander will have his first taste of action as leader when the West Indies tackle India in two T20 matches in Florida on August 27 and 28. The WICB and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently agreed on playing two T20 matches in America at the end of the four-Test series that is taking place in the region currently.

Sammy led the West Indies to the World T20 title but criticised the WICB at the post match conference and this did not go down too well with the WICB.

As a result he has been removed as captain and Brathwaite will now take over the mantle of leadership. The St Lucian Sammy who led the Zouks in at the 2016 CPL T20 can now consider his regional career over.

He made an exit with his team from the CPL on Thursday night as the Trinbago Knight Riders defeated them by five wickets in the play off in St Kitts.

Brathwaite has little or no experience as a leader and the WICB will hope that he can quickly learn the tricks of the trade with the next World T20 carded for 2018 in South Africa.

The West Indies is likely to be without many of the players who played at the World T20 in India for the upcoming two matches in Florida, as Guardian Media understands that the selectors want to build a new team with younger players, as they focus on defending their title in two years time.

The Best Outfits And The Biggest Stars At The 2016 Olympic Opening Ceremony

6 Aug

Source: Huffington Post

The Olympics are always mired in controversy, and the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro are no different ― Brazil itself is in complete and utter turmoil, a lot of people are asking how these games are even happening this year.

Some of this controversy has focused on Team USA’s parade uniforms, designed by Polo Ralph Lauren, which total a whopping price tag of $1,512.50). As soon as the U.S. team’s parade uniforms were announced, the internet was quick to point out how parts of it resemble the stripes on the Russian flag.

But no one seemed worried about the controversy at the Opening Ceremony, instead celebrating their respective countries in style as they walked the Parade of Nations. Check out Canada’s blazing maple leaves, Croatia’s bold checkers, and Chile’s … well, bold choice.
