Sari Sari Falls, Dominica

11 Aug

Sari Sari Falls near La Plaine in the south east – a great river hike with some tricky boulder climbing but well worth the effort. Avoid the trail when it’s raining as flash flooding is possible; but otherwise, this is a magnificent waterfall.

The famous Boiling Lake, Dominica

16 Jul

“There are so many awesome hikes on the nature island but The Boiling Lake Trail is hard to beat. Taking a trained, experienced and certified guide with you is a prudent measure; the terrain is tricky, the route is not always clear, and local knowledge always makes the outing more interesting and enjoyable.” – Hike into Dominica

Waitukubuli National Trail – Dominica

7 Jul

Waitukubuli National Trail Segment 4 runs from Trafalgar to Pont Casse via Laudat, Providence and the Middleham Falls. It passes through a vast and beautiful wilderness of unspoiled rainforest habitat along the margins of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. A steep ascent and then descent brings you to a deep river gorge and bridge crossing (pictured here) before arriving at Pont Casse. This is an intermediate trail that takes around 5-6 hours to complete.

Hike into Dominica

17 Jun

Sometimes the trail is through rainforest, other times cloud forest or fumarole vegetation. And on occasion the track runs along and down the sides of coastal cliffs and volcanic headlands. But some of the most rewarding are those that follow a river – because there’s usually a magnificent waterfall waiting for you at the end. Considering its size, the diversity of hiking trails and habitats on Dominica is truly amazing. In this instance the journey takes you through and alongside the White River to the awesome Victoria Falls near Delices.

The Freshwater Lake Trail is one of the loveliest on the island. Roughly a one hour loop, the trail is mystical, it has awesome views of coast and volcanoes, and it is replete with a mind-boggling diversity of flora. Though amazing on a bright, clear day, this trail is equally beautiful in the wet – which is often the case here in the heart of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Unmissable.

The ‘Heart of Dominica’ has some wonderful short waterfall walks including Soltoun (Sultan) Falls, Spanny Falls, Jacko Falls and of course the Emerald Pool. All are short and easy. A little to the east of the Central Forest Reserve, the Charles Warner Secret Pool is a little more challenging and in the Bells area, the historic Jacko Steps Trail is truly a world class hike. Combine several of these hikes with a river bath, lunch or a picnic and you will enjoy a relaxing and beautiful day out in the lush heartland of Dominica’s island wilderness.
