ECCO MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: BOMANI

Written by Christine “Chrycee” Charlemagne from Saint Lucia

It all but consumed him. Day and night, sweet melodies replayed in his head. Over and over. Everything he saw, touched, felt and heard, evoked within him the need to craft his thoughts and feelings into beautiful lyrical masterpieces.  His fingers twitched to get it all out on paper. His lips buzzed to sing out loud the songs which radiated from his heart. As his need to create sweet music grew—to a point where it seemed to become even more important than the job he then held, and everything else in his life for that matter!—it became undoubtedly clear to Bomani that music was his true calling.

The Saint Vincent & the Grenadines born songwriter, performer and recording artiste describes himself an optimist and an adventurer who loves life and music to no end. He recalls this his love-affair with music began during his secondary school days, songwriting and singing. Upon his graduation he made a concerted effort to become aligned with musicians, composers and other songwriters in his home island.

Bomani describes his music and sound as “an eclectic Afro Caribbean Calypso/Ragga Soca blend with hints of broader music styles” which have influenced him on his journey. Truly his music reflects the essence of what it’s like to be a Caribbean native.

He draws his inspiration from the wonderful world around him—the universe, God, his environment, friends, family, the stranger he unexpectedly runs into, and even his dreams. Through his music he seeks to share a message of love and happiness for and among people.

Among his numerous music experiences to date, the Vincentian artiste says one of his most amazing moments centered around the release of his very first Album, “Deep” and the subsequent international tour. “Deep,” featured several of his earlier hits which led him to perform the world over. He adds his capturing of the St Vincent & the Grenadines 2004 Road March title and the OECS Soca Monarch title in St Lucia in 2005 as highly memorable accomplishments. A number of Bomani’s songs have also been signed to giant Caribbean music label, VP Records.

He credits his successes to date to his dedication and willingness to work hard, a formidable team and support system and an ability to remain focused on music creation and promotion even in difficult times. And there certainly have been difficult times. As a professional artiste, Bomani notes that one of his biggest challenges in establishing his music career has been a struggle for adequate radio airplay throughout the year in St Vincent. This shortfall, he says, makes it difficult for the general public to become familiar with new material. Related to his challenge is lack of performance platforms for sustainable growth and development.

Yet Bomani and his team refuse to be limited by those challenges; so they are constantly seeking alternative means of music promotion and networking, while exploring performance opportunities regionally and internationally.

With his determined spirit, soulful voice and infectious melodies we have absolutely no doubt that Bomani will achieve his ultimate goal; his music transcending time and generations, touching  people across the world; inspiring aspiring artistes as those before him inspired him.

In fact if you listen to his music releases from over the years it’ll become evident to you that he’s already achieving his mission.

ECCO: When you’re not doing music, what are you doing?

Bomani: When I’m not doing music you can find me chillin’ with friends and family at home, watching movies, or at the beach, or at any of several of the hangout spots in SVG having a few drinks and eating great food.

ECCO: What are your passions besides music?

Bomani: Visual arts, helping with the development of young people and cricket.

ECCO: What makes you laugh?

Bomani: Great stand-up comedy and political and social satire make me laugh and good jokes generally.

ECCO: Name one thing about yourself that most people won’t know

Bomani: Most people probably won’t know that I’m a picky eater.

ECCO: Who are you music mentors? Music influences?

Bomani: There have been several individuals who have mentored me over the years here in SVG, Mr Lennox Bowman, Mr Franklyn Edwards who is also my manager. I’ve had great conversations with legendary Vincentian calypsonians like Winston Soso and Becket that I consider as great council. My musical influences over the years have been wide enough to include artistes from several genres such as Peter Tosh, Berres Hammond, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Gladys Knights, Whitney Houston, Luthor Vandross, Seal, David Rudder, the original Burning Flames, Krossfyah, Winston Soso and Becket.

#NewMusic: Counting My Blessings by Rupee (Bajan Soca 2016)

8 Jul

Often we see people smiling, laughing, dancing, having fun…having the time of their lives….yet what we often don’t realize is everything that lead up to those moments of joy and happiness. For many of us out there those smiles, those hands in the air, that celebration through singing…dancing…a little pump, a wuk up or whine..lol..is a result of overcoming life changing obstacles, hurdles or struggles. If you are one of those people or if you know somebody like this, you know what it means to Count Your Blessings…in any which way you feel to 🙂 – Rupee

Soca Format 101

8 Jul

As we’re in the height of carnival season in most of the Caribbean islands I thought I’d share some tad bits for those in the soca arena;

LEARN TO SING
*beware of autotone and melodyne
*use breathing and vocal exercises… They’ll come in handy when you’re performing
*although I love karaoke am sure no one likes to hear screeching voices nor off key notes
*enunciate: it’s a turn off not being able to hear what a singer is saying
*take care of your voice and your voice will take care of you… Hydrate and do regular vocal exercises!

LEARN TO PERFORM
*enough of the long talk… It takes away from your presentation
*bring your song to life
*can you dance?
*can you move the crowd?
* study what the veterans and those who have and are making it and how you can learn from their mistakes and successes

DEVELOP YOUR OWN STYLE
*nobody likes a copycat; strive to bring your original authentic uniqueness to the fore
*what sets you apart from your counterparts better yet how can you distinguish yourself to your advantage?

LEARN TO WRITE
*READ!!! Reading maketh a full man… The more you read the better your command of the English language and wider your scope for writing material
*learn about music theory/ melody, chord, treble clef through pan or piano
*can you structure a song?
*songwriting can save you money and time as a singer and can eventually earn/ save you extra cash

STUDY THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
*know your rights as an artiste
*learn about copyright laws and royalties
*find out how to brand yourself and market your work
*stop treating this like a hobby and start thinking of it more of a business

THINK B.I.G!
*think beyond the road, stage or carnival
*who are you singing for; local, regional or international audience?
*will you be singing groovy or ragga soca or both?

NETWORK/COLLABORATE
*who knows you?
*get to know promoters, DJs, dancers/choreographers, musicians, producers, media personnels and fellow artistes
*if you’re not likable people won’t forward your music so remember it’s nice to be important but it’s way more important to be nice
*acquaint yourself with persons with an ear for music who can give you honest constructive criticism to better hone your craft.

Happy writing, singing and listening to the heartbeat of our culture – SOCA!

Vincy Mas 2016 in Review

8 Jul
In the words of veteran calypsonian Alston Becket Cyrus, “carnival is mas and music! carnival is calypso! carnival is mas and steel-band! carnival is peace!” As an inbred music lover, my fondness for soca music and carnival on a whole transcends the revelry or “good-time” that most may identify with. I have a penchant appreciation for the carnival art-form; the sweet soca vibes that excite you to jump and wave in harmonic rhythm, the euphoric steel-band that awakes the jamboree spirit, the dazzling array of spectacular costumes that depicts the kaleidoscope of color and culture of our 32 cays and particularly the construction of animated calypso lyrics.
Soca music is an ultimate factor in St. Vincent and the Grenadines because it is in essence the heartbeat of our carnival while calypso highlights the socio-political and economical issues with a theatrical buoyancy. However, there are crucial elements that makes a soca or calypso song successful besides a heavy bass line, a catchy or repetitive hook and up-tempo beat. A calypso or soca song can be considered professionally constructed when it is well-written, ably produced, skillfully mixed and mastered then matched with the variables of apt vocals, harmonic simplicity, danceability, beat variation and energy. In other words, music is both a science formula and art so if it isn’t seasoned, mixed or cooked properly then it makes it hard for listeners to swallow.
Lest it be said that “we don’t like we“, note that this is not a pull down but an assessment of our current situation this season. Although some soca artiste seem to be densely hell bent on the “get drunk”or  “mash up de place” phenomena promulgating a culture of hooliganism and an atmosphere of ignorance and lunacy, I am happy to report that this was one of the best years in terms of lyrical content and musical production when compared to previous years. Apart from that one instance on Soca Monarch night when my visiting female friend almost got into a scuffle with a young man for repeatedly pouncing on her when a particular artiste took stage it was otherwise enjoyable. Carnival is supposed to be a season of togetherness and fun enjoying the mas and music NOT warding off unwanted gyrations and guarding oneself from being physically incapacitated from the juvenile actions of other rowdy patrons. It’s fair time that we charge our artistes to channel their creative juices to produce tasteful music that illustrates top-notch storytelling.  It is on this note that I must give props to Alex “Kubiyashi” BarnwellLester “Mack” Iroha and Phillip “Wetty Beatz” Bastien for playing an integral role in raising the bar and channeling the course of soca music over the years but most notably providing exceptional music production for Vincy soca 2016.
Vincy Mas 2016 was dubbed The Hottest Carnival in the Caribbean which saw the core of the festivities celebrated between June 24th to July 5th.  The festive period hosted a medley of activities from Soca Monarch, Dimanche Gras, Mardi Gras along with privately hosted events that entertained a melting pot of nationals and foreigners alike buzzing with excitement.
Although the fondness of a soca song may vary individually and or influenced by one or more factors, here is an unbiased list of palatable soca songs which were favorites among true carnivalians listed in no particular ranking order;
