As many across the world continue to mourn the death of Harambe after the gorilla was shot when a 4-year-old boy entered his enclosure at Cincinnati Zoo last week, news now surfaces that the gorilla has a Jamaican connection.

The silverback gorilla was named after a reggae song from 69-year-old veteran reggae artiste Rita Marley according to Dan Van Coppenolle, the guy who won a CBS competition to name the gorilla back in the 90’s.

Coppenolle says he chose the name ‘Harambe’ because he used to work out to the Marley single and he also loved the meaning on the word.

Harambe means “to pull together, to help each other, sharing and caring and to come together.”

Rita, the widow of reggae legend Bob Marley, released ‘Harambee’ in 1982.
