CARNIVAL S.V.G STYLE – “VINCY MAS”

The largest cultural event “Vincy Mas” is Vincentian expression in all of its glory. Climaxing during the last week of June to the first week in July. Packed with pageantry and expression linked to our African Caribbean heritage. Carnival is colorful, humorous and full of surprises. Calypsonians, steel pan orchestras, beauty contestants, fancy mas bands and others perform and parade to compete for carnival honors, while the populace watch, participate and enjoy.

Carnival in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is managed by the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC). This committee is designed to orchestrate all carnival activities and is currently headed by Mr. Dennis Ambrose (Chairman). The board is responsible for developing and implementing marketing strategies for the promotion of carnival and other festivities; secure finance and sponsorship; creating adequate sub-committees which shall be responsible for producing events under the authority of the corporation. They also grant permission to private individuals to host events during the season. Major sponsors for Vincy Mas 2016 are FLOW; National Lotteries Authority; St Vincent and the Grenadines Tourism Authority and others.

Kicking off with an official launch in May all the way through to July, culminating in the world famous street parties and Mardi gras. In between there are a whole host of wonderfully entertaining events such as the Miss SVG Pageant; the Soca Monarch Competition; Ms Carival; Steel and Glitter Pan Fest; Junior Mas; Mardi Gras; and J’Ouvert just to name a few.

The Miss SVG Pageant is an annual carnival event where eight (8) beautiful, brilliant, talented and confident young ladies compete for the title, a university scholarship and the opportunity to compete in the Miss Carival Pageant. The 2016 Contestants include: Shanique Alexander – Miss Bank of St Vincent and the Grenadines; Anya Frederick – Miss St Vincent Electrical Services; Vakeesha John – Miss Agricultural Input Warehouse; Zenna Lewis – Miss LOTTO; Raneasha Loraine – Miss Play 4; Dahvana Providence – Miss Metrocint General Insurance Services; Jeanetta Richards – Ms Jergens; and Nikianna Williams – Miss FLOW. The show will be held on June 4th 2016, at Carnival city Victoria Park.

Soca Monarch is an event where soca artistes vie against each other as they use stage craft and other antics fused with up tempo soca melodies competing for 1st , 2nd or 3rd place. While Fantastic Friday is an event which showcases the semi finalists for the Calypso Monarch. Soca artistes such as Skinny Fabulous, Luta, Problem Child, Hypa 4000 and Justin Arrindell (production featured below) just to name a few has so far produced some amazing tracks for Vincy Mas 2016.

Miss Carival is the premier Beauty pageant of the region which features contestants from throughout the Caribbean, similar to the Miss SVG pageant. The event will be hosted in St. Vincent and the Grenadines at Victoria Park.

Junior Mas, Calypso and Pan Fest are events held to ensure that children are included in the largest annual fest.

Mardi Gras is a parade of various masquerade bands and signals the finale of Vincy Mas. Band of the year is a much sought after prize by those competing and partying during the Mardi Gras parade of bands, a fabulously colorful bonanza of costumes, music and dance. The Masquerade bands competing this year are: Digicel’s Nelson Bloc; Ahdrenalin Carnival; Mirage Productions; Blondie Bird and Friends; Tribes Mas Band; Lynx Mas Band; Imagination Mas Band; Xtreme Fanatics; High Voltage Mas Band; Owen Ralph and the Professionals; Melbourne Artisans; and SVG Players International. The Digicel’s Nelson Bloc won “Band of the Year 2015”, and the team is looking forward to claiming the title once more along with King and Queen of the bands.
