The Caribbean has secured two places in TripAdvisor’s world’s best islands top 10, with Jamaica bagging third place, edging Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) into fourth.

Jamaica was pipped to the post by Maui in Hawaii, which took top honours as best island in the world, followed by the Greek tourist paradise of Santorini. Indonesia’s Bali, famous for its forested volcanic mountains and pristine beaches, rounded off the top five.

Trip Advisor traveller reviews were responsible for the rankings, and Jamaica’s “amazing beaches, shimmering blue water and cuisine” factored significantly into its success. Special mention was also made of the Jamaica Festival from July 31 to August 6.

The island of Providenciales in TCI is home to Grace Bay, one of the world’s best beaches, according to TripAdvisor. The Windvibes Kiteboarding Tournament on July 10 also received special mention.

The Spanish island of Majorca, with its sunsplashed beaches and sheltered coves, placed sixth, while the East African nation of Mauritius, a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, took the seventh spot.

The island of Phuket in the Andaman Sea is renowned for some of the best beaches in Thailand, making it a popular choice at number eight, while ninth place went to Bora Bora, one of the most exotic islands in the world due to its remote location.

Brazil’s Fernando de Noronha, the sole representative from South America, was named the 10th best island in the world and previously won an award for the world’s best beach.

Australia, which is famed for its spectacular beaches and underwater wonders of the Great Barrier Reef, failed to nab a spot in the global top 10.

TripAdvisor said the annual awards are based on millions of reviews and the winners are determined using an algorithm that evaluates the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings from the past 12 months.
